Last Saturday, my husband and I hosted our first “Slow Food Day.” Modeled after the Slow Food Movement, it was a day for healthy local food, play, nourishment, fun, and relaxing.
Our window was 3:00 to 10:00 p.m., and guests arrived with food to cook, to share, to enjoy–and there was plenty to drink as well. The steady stream of people was perfect. No rushing, no set time to eat “dinner.” We cooked and ate when we felt like it, sat down and relaxed and fed our minds and nourished our hearts between courses.
Thai chicken lettuce wraps; wine; almond pound cake; wine; fresh water with lemon, lime and orange slices; homemade non-alcholic sangria; multi-mushroom bisque; wine; cheesy olive bread; shrimp, arugula and mascarpone bruschetta. And wine. We had plenty of anti-oxidants and resveratrol on hand!
Ages ranged from early double digits (10?) to late 60′s. Everybody contributed. People talked and dished. It was a great mix of friends and food, and if it weren’t for the holidays and people being out of town, we would do it again next month.
All in all, it was a delicious way to spend a day and evening. And the leftovers were pretty awesome too.
We will do it again in March 2012. Stay tuned and stay in touch.
